Our Foundation
Understanding Somatic Developmental Psychology
Somatic Developmental Psychology represents a profound integration of psychological understanding with the wisdom held within our bodies. This approach recognizes that our experiences, particularly from early development, are encoded not just in our minds but throughout our entire being—in our muscles, posture, breath, and nervous system.
The Body Remembers
Our bodies carry the story of our lives. From our earliest moments, experiences shape how we hold ourselves, how we breathe, how we respond to stress and connection. Somatic Developmental Psychology offers a roadmap for understanding these patterns and gently transforming them.
This approach moves beyond talk therapy alone, inviting awareness to the sensations, movements, and impulses that arise in the present moment. Through this embodied awareness, we can access and heal experiences that words alone cannot reach.
The Bodynamic System
All practitioners at Terwillegar Counselling Centre are trained in the Bodynamic System, a comprehensive approach to Somatic Developmental Psychology developed in Denmark over four decades.
Developmental Framework
The Bodynamic System maps psychological development through seven distinct stages, each associated with specific muscle groups and psychological capacities. This framework helps identify where developmental support may be needed.
Body-Mind Integration
Through gentle, mindful contact and movement awareness, we support the integration of fragmented experiences, building psychological resilience through the body's own resources.
Mutual Connection
The Bodynamic approach emphasizes the therapeutic relationship itself as a vehicle for healing, where practitioner presence and attunement create a safe container for transformation.
Core Principles of Our Approach
Safety First
We prioritize creating a sense of safety in your body and in the therapeutic relationship, understanding that healing happens when we feel secure enough to explore.
Developmental Awareness
Understanding how early experiences shape current patterns allows us to provide exactly the developmental support that was needed but perhaps not available.
Embodied Presence
We cultivate the capacity to be present with whatever arises—sensations, emotions, memories—with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment.
Relational Healing
Many wounds happen in relationship, and healing unfolds in relationship. We emphasize authentic connection as a pathway to wholeness.
Resource Building
Before exploring difficult territory, we help you develop internal resources—capacities for self-regulation, grounding, and self-compassion.
Respect for Pace
Your system knows what it needs and when. We follow your body's wisdom, never pushing beyond what feels manageable in the moment.
Begin Your Journey to Embodied Wellness
"The body is not an object to be fixed, but a subject to be heard. In listening, we find the path home to ourselves."
